Design Summary

Implementing new rules and regulations regarding tobacco use can be challenging, especially on university campuses where both students and staff are directly affected. Our design aims at making this transition easier. We based our brand on the following mantra: Positive, Sustainable, Familiar.
Awareness regarding cigarette smoking is tricky, as it can often come off as antagonizing. We opted for a proactive and supportive approach for our design. In our posters, we highlighted the health benefits of quitting instead of just stating the drawbacks of smoking.
We also included  the contact information of the AUBMC Cessation Program to inform people about available help if they chose to quit. Moreover, in our design, we focused on making the area practical with a canopy that shields from rain and sun, however it is not too comfortable as to encourage socializing and therefore social smoking.
The design encompasses also economical and environmental aspects,to highlight sustainability. We chose to use upcyled PolyVinyl Chloride (PVC) pipes for our canopy as it is economical, available and recyclable. We also used stainless steel for the receptacle as it is corrosion resistant, water resistant, and fully recyclable. We chose to invest in renewable energy by installing solar light bulbs that are available locally. We also included a water collection mechanism to collect rainwater that can used for on-campus irrigation of plants. Moreover, the design is safe as we included cigarette snuffers to avoid smoldering and consequently a fire hazard.
Finally, we wanted our design to feel familiar. We placed upbeat and relatable comments on the side of the receptacle that can be observed when tracking the number of cigarette butts. We also, added some aspects of AUB, such as Main Gate, to our posters in order to make the smoking part of the AUB community still feel included.

Our team receiving the second place awards from the President Dr. Fadlo Khuri.
